Mighty fun occupation at that (hitting that is, umpiring, not so much). Howie Kendrick is batting and Kenji Johjima is catching.

I rented the Canon EF 70-300mm lens for Opening Day at Safeco Field between the Seattle Mariners and Anaheim Angels and found it to be a pretty nice lens. At around $600 it is on the high end of affordable (for me anyway) while giving decent reach for baseball games and such. It is noticeably sharper than my EF-S 55-250mm and focuses quite a bit faster. Not long enough for bird photography but there really isn’t much suited for that kind of work without spending as much as a cheap vehicle would cost.

  1. very nice! I am always interested in hearing about lenses that will work well for sports. My son plays football and I try and try to get sharp shots. It’s so tough!

  2. Great Action shot Ted but where is the Ball? It looks like you have the contact point nailed, is it compressed and thereby hidden in the motion blur. Offer that shot to the Batter it really demonstrates his power well. Love it.

  3. Really nice action shot. I love baseball and am so happy that we’re back in season! Go Cincinnati Reds!!

  4. What clarity – this is awesome!

  5. This looks great even on this ‘waiting for my monitor to come back from warranty hell Goodwill tiny monitor’ You need to buy this lens Ted!

  6. I hope you sat back to enjoy some of the game in full panorama instead of just thru the viewfinder! But you got some super shots so either way I guess it was worth it.
